Cyberspace

In this passage of convergences it talks about cyberspace. In the passages Jonathan G.S. Koppell makes an argument that cyberspace is not real space. I agree one hundred percent with what he is saying in this essay. I don't think anyone should think that the internet can be an alternative world. There are a lot of people out there today that play different types of games online that seem like another world, but in reality you are just sitting in front of your computer just like the other people you are playing against. I personally have been a part of some of these games, or virtual worlds. Another passage in here by Linden Lab CEO argues that going onto these virtual worlds can advance our evolution. I am going to have to disagree with this also, because like the video games you are still just sitting in front of your computer just like all of the other people that you are in the virtual world with.

Cyberspace

I agree with the writers who say we shouldn't see cyberspace as a physical place. Cyberspace obviously isn't a physical place. You can't touch it, you can't taste it, you can't smell it. You've only got the sight and sound senses going for you. Cyberspace does try to mimic real life as best as it can, though. You can find people with similar life styles as you and create an online community for socializing(like on message boards).

Rant: I think chatting online and texting has made some of our generation sooo socially awkward. Not to pick on guys, but for instance, someone asked me to senior prom in a facebook message. You just can't do that in my opinion! lol You have to man up, and ask in person or atleast by phone. Talking through technologies can become a security blanket. This reminds me of the movie trailers I've seen for Hot Tub Time Machine. The young geeky guy says, "What if you step on a bug and the internet's never invented?" and one of the older guys makes fun of him and says, "Then you have to talk to girls with your mouth".

Times have really changed! Jay Mohr's character, Gary, on the TV show Gary Unmarried puts it best when he makes a comment about Second Life: "We didn't have anything like that when I was a kid. We had..outside." Just think of what type of virtual games they will come up with by the time we become parents! Technological leaps are happening faster and faster as the years go on.

Cyberspace,

I bevlieve that cyber space is taking over. You can do anything on the internet as you would if you got in your car. You can even create a new you. It can be dangerous though because anyone could lie about anything and on the internet it is so much easier for people to get your information and you not even know. I do spend most of my time on the internet with facebook and just browsing a random things it is much more interesting then the regular world. I dont really like the face of that thought just because people aren't getting out and doing things all they do is sit home and eat next to their computer which is one of the many reasons we are becoming obese.

CYBERSPACE

After reading up on the topic of cyberspace, i really do think that the world is headed into that direction. As you see we tend to do more things and now are buying more things on the computer. It has came so far that we can buy groceries and even rent DVD movies from the internet. This is showing a sign of how lazy the world is getting. Many people are to tired to leave there homes so decide to get everything on the computer. I even know people that look for all there furniture or house supplies online instead of just going to stores and buying it. In a lot of ways this is not good. i think people should be able to get things through cyberspace but certain things should just be prohibited. For example like groceries, i feel everyone can go to the grocery store and pick put there on groceries. If your to lazy to do that then the world is going to have some major problems in the future. On the other hand like clothes , i think you can should be able to get and buy through cyberspace because they might have what you like and for cheaper than the regular store would. Its many ups and downs when it comes to this but i think if we take the approach of doing everything from cyberspace, then that's not good at all for the near future.

When it comes to cyberspace there are positive and negative aspects to it. It can be something simple that is only a hobby but it can also take over people’s lives. I don’t necessarily believe that it should be done with all together mainly because you can’t blame cyberspace for people’s personal issues.Cyberspace can be like any other hobby in the sense that in the wrong hands it can be dangerous. A lot of bad things have happened due to cyberspace, but then again when you go to the root of it ( i apologize if this sounds terrible), why not blame the 14 year old girl who puts up pictures of herself in a bikini and her phone number? I am not in any way trying to justify the actions of the weirdos out there, but maybe there would be less problems if people were more careful. And to get on the subject of using the internet to create alternate lives, that to me is just weird. I know people probably have there own reasons for doing the things that they do, but I just find it to be an escape from a reality that we all need to face. And avoiding that reality just isn’t healthy. Now I’m not saying everybody who gets on the internet automatically becomes a creep or mentally unstable person, but those do exist. In conclusion I think that we shouldn’t blame cyberspace for the bad stuff, but utilize it to our best advantage.

Cyberspace

The internet is becoming more and more popular now that technology is advancing. Cyberspace though seems to have a large affect on people's lives. One of the things I sometimes can't believe is how people make new "lives" on the internet. There are so many social sites that let you create a whole new life for yourself.I think that these can be dangerous and should be altogether taken off the internet. Cyberspace is not meant to be another life for people. It's taken advantage of all the time. People get physically hurt from things like this. I mean think about it, how many incidents have there been with Myspace and people being kidnapped or murdered? Although cyberspace is a good way to connect with people and to stay in touch, it should only be used for that. It should not be a way to get away from the real world.

CyberSpace?

As I was reading, I was thinking if “cyberspace” consists of real places. I started to agree because when I shop online I feel like I really am browsing in a store. However, then I came across the Second Life section. I’ve never heard of this “virtual world.” After finding out what it was, I was wierded out. I think its weird people want to make little characters online and pretend that’s their life. If someone is constantly on the computer and using technology than their personal communication skills will decrease. These people cannot pretend that their life is in a computer and the tangible world is on the back burner. I understand that the growing technology of today is useful, but only to some extent. I think people are getting obsessive over chat rooms and those 3D virtual worlds. The internet is a place to go, but it is not real. Just because your logging onto the internet doesn’t mean you’re escaping from society- you’re just on the computer.

cyberspace

i think that 'cyberspace' is a place that exist....although its not on a map its a place for ppl to get away..most people i feel are moving towards 'living through the internet'..like the internet gives people a freedom they never had once before, for instance many guys now try and build realtionships with females over the computer (and vice versa) bc they get a confidence of being unseen when speaking to the person and you cant hear their voice...mostly for guys. they dont like being shot down becasue of their egos...so they rather approach a girl on the computer where their comfortable to say things they wouldnt other wise in reality. ive had this happen to me many times. its just like guys wanting to get to know you over the phone...instead of taking you out or meeting eahother for dates to talk. many people are comfortable on the computer and bc they can create their own screen naames, and what have you, their then able to create a persona of their own choice....mainly one thats different from who they are in reality...
i think cyberspace is a place now for ppl, things that we used to do in our own 'real' lives we now do on the computer..like, build and harvest our own farms, create our own communities, shop online, pay bills, build virtual dream houses, and now even make 'phone calls' over the internet using skype...with all of these factors included, why wouldnt it be a place?

Cyber Space

Okay, I gotta be honest... most of this wasn't interesting (I ended up dozing at times trying to concentrate on this lol), but I gotta say, there are some interesting points that these articles brought up.

From what I can tell, this article talks about the internet (aka 'cyberspace') about how it's becoming more and more of something we live with, and literally depend on most of our lives.

It ironically reminds me of my last school year in High School, of how my English teacher brought up about how texting (with cell phone)... even if people were right next to each other, would do so like it was water. It's becoming more and more of the main form of communication, changing our normal way of talking to one another, in comparison to YEARS ago.

In ways of looking at it, yes, the internet's been taking over as one of the main means of communication. That was probably the similar case when the telephone came out; it changed the methods of how one can talk to anothere. This is no different.... just a different means.

I never heard about this 'Second Life' game, but from the sounds of it, it sounds like 'The Sims', except for adults. Not for it, nor against it. In general, the games themselves, with a bunch of people who play together, having fun, talking, laughing... is just another form of how we communicate, how we create fanaticism.

The internet's good for not only as a form of chatting, but as a tool. Sure, it can be corrupted at times, with all the bad things out there, but that's just depends on how the user uses it. I, personally, can't go on without checking out my Facebook or my email after a day or two; it's an exaggeration, but it shows how much of a great invention we have. It's used for both personal and public needs.

It could be taking us in, but it's sure a great thing to have. But like anything: too much of a good thing can be bad for you.

Cyber World!!!

I believe that the internet has changed many things. Cyber world or space is very much so a real thing in my opinion. With so many social networking sites, you can escape reality of having actual face to face relationships with people and still keep in touch.

You can also visit many different places with just a search in a search engine like yahoo or google. If you want to shop without going directly to the mall or store, you can freely do online shopping with a few clicks.

Also there is a lot of privacy with the internet. You can do what you want without a next door neighbor bothering you or being in your business.

I think the internet or virtual things are a way to escape from reality. They can be a disservice. Technology in general can be as well. No one wants to call people anymore, they just IM each other or send a text message. Virtuality is also a form of imitation. For example The Sims, or creating an Avatar. Video games are also a tool in desocializing.

I am for the advancement of technology, but at the same time I will like to keep the authentic things going. Technology should be a supplement, not a replacement.
