After reading "As MTV Turns 10, Pop Goes the World." I completely agree with Jon Pareles' view that MTV produces music that looks better then it sounds. I've never really thought about it before but when MTV first came out it was like the age of music videos. It probably wasn't as common to see a music video unless it was on MTV. It's weird to think of how many things were influenced just because of music television. The example of "rock" clothing being sold at malls just because people saw it in the music videos, and how dancing and music videos went hand in hand really fit well into the article. It makes you wonder how different things would be without music videos, and how much we are influenced by them. Popular dance moves and clothing can all be traced back to what we see in music videos, of course we are effected by many other things besides music videos but they are a large component. Going back to the statement that MTV produces music that looks better than it sounds, once again I completely agree. I know I've said this in one of my earlier blogs but people base so much on the visual to determine if they like a piece of music today it's ridiculous. We can focus more on what somebody looks like or how entertaining or showy their performance is that we don't actually hear what they are saying, and most of the time we don't care. If you ask any teenager today they'll probably tell you as long as the song has a catchy beat they can dance to it doesn't really matter what message is being sent across. It's sad and frustrating but its the reality of where we are today.

Animal by Mike Snow

I don't really have a favorite song so I'm writing about this particular song that I recently saw the music video for on MTV U. I don't really remember the music video, so the reason I like it is not in the visual aspects. The tune of the song is really what captured me in. I couldn't even remember the lyrics or the name of the artist so it was one of those times where the tune is stuck in your head, and you're thinking, "seriously!..what song is this?!" and you just have to wait until you some how hear it again in life to see who the artist is. I finally heard it again last week, and I luckily liked the lyrics in addition to the music. http://www.songlyrics.com/miike-snow/animal-lyrics/ The tune is repetitive and I usually hate that in a song. But I like this song for some reason. I think I like the lyrics the most. The song, to me, talks about how we try to hide the fact that we mess up in life. And it also says to me that there is always someone in your life who you try to be a better person for.
The song "Love Bomb" by a group called NERD is sort of strange song tht has a very good message. I like the song because when u first hear the song the beat is simple and and it really catches ur attention. The message in the song (being "love bomb") is generally speaking of of hw the world today is soo full of hate and anger tht, someone (rather it be person a person or country ect.) would need to drop a bomb tht speads love all across the world. It also talks about hw the government feeds us B.S. and lies to us believe what ever they want, and tht we as a people shouldnt stand for anything, and fall for everything. The chorus of the song talks about hw the bomb would be so bright and powerful tht would turn the night into day and it could be heard frm anywhere.
In this case i feel tht the "hw" as well as the "what" play very big roles in the way the song is precieved and also what the song is about. The slow pace at the begining of the song helps to create pictures in ur mind of the things talked about. The while the chorus picks up the beat gets intense and somewhat serious as though as it were a cry for help. This lets yu kno tht something needs to be done and we need to gt ur attention as quickly as possible. Th words in the song, as I stated before seem to provide a message within the message of the actual song. This is why I feel tht "Love Bomb" by NERD is a great example of a message through song, as far as the "hw" vs. the "wht" in a song

this song rimes

Rime of the Ancient Mariner, by Iron Maiden, is perhaps a combination of everything to love about the band. It is a 13-minute retelling of an 18th century poem. The song itself resembles a storm, with fast guitar work on the outside hiding a calm eye in the middle, where several lines from the original work are read in a dramatic style. Both works are highly emotional, telling the tale of a man cursed to watch everything he knew die. It somehow paints a vivid picture, yet manages to do so without drowning the listener in adjectives. It also fits thematically with the rest of the Powerslave album, of which it is the last song.

Sound

I am a big fan of hip hop and rythm and blues. One of my favorite artist is RJD2. He produced this one song which i am a huge fan of called Chicken Bone Circuit. I suggest this song to everyone that loves hip hop. The thing about this song is that there are no words. He only does instrumental so it is purly audiroty. Whenever I listen to this song I always have a big smile on my face. Its the sound of the drums is just so relaxing, it kinda puts me in a trance sometimes. I just cant get over how good the sound is, if you listen to it and you like hip hop i gurantee that this song will make you happy. I could sit down and listen to it all day over and over again.

A Song That Matters To Me

A song that means a lot to me that i really like is called "Never Gonna Be Alone" by Nickelback. This song means a lot to me because it talks about how time goes by so fast and you should tell the people around you what they mean to you before it's too late. The music in this song is also really good and catches your attention. When i hear this song i just think of the people who are really important to me and how much they really mean to me and that I should tell them all the time how much i love them because you never know when it's going to be your last chance to be with somebody. I'm pretty sure the song is about a man and his girlfriend or wife or something like that, but i think it can be directed towards anyone that you love because it tells them they will never be alone and you'll always be there for them. Thats why this song means so much to me, because there's always one person in your life that you're always going to love and be there for.

Iris by Goo Goo Dolls

My favorite song is Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. This is also my mom's favorite song also. This song means a lot to me because my family has had its ups and downs, and my mom has always stuck by my side. She taught me a lot of things in life. This song to me symbolizes the struggles we have gone through and how we have also had a very close bond. My dad was absent for the majority of my childhood, which has definitely made who I am today. My mom is a very strong woman and she has taught me to be strong as well. It also symbolizes how hard it was for her to slowly let me go as I got older. She is very protective over me and no matter how bad I mess up, she doesn't get mad at me, we just find a solution together. The lyrics to this song talk about being by someone's side and how people don't understand situations unless they are in our shoes. At the end of the song the lyrics are "I just want you to know who I am". My mom is the only person in world to know everything little thing about me. She is the one I go to for everything, no matter how hard it may be to do so. She is the only person who really knows who I am, which ties in with the lyrics of the song. She knows me like the back of her hand.

Music..

For me music is 'my energy' in a sense, it picks me up when im down, and in a way it lets me be something or portray a different character. when i really 'get into' a song, i feel the emotion and energy the artist felt when they were recording the song, even though i wasnt there. a song that i feel strongly for, is called 'X-Factor' by Lauryn Hill. at first when i heard the song, my bestfriend was playing it in the car, it was a 'love' type of song i guess you could say but it talked about the problems within the relationship so i guess thats why she liked it and i didnt. never hearing the song before, when it was over i loved it. i couldnt understand why at the time, or even did i understand why when i actually thought i did. sounds crazy right. well i was in a relationship and the whole thing was rocky to sasy the least, good thing it wasnt a serious one lol. but then i heard the song again...and i started liking it. i related that song to my experience with that relationship. thats when i thought i knew why i liked the song. i was wrong. now i know why. although the song talked about the negative things in that persons relationship, the song itself was 'beautiful' and i couldnt let the horrible experience i had ruin that song. i like the song now becasue of how it makes me feel and not because i relate to the words. the beat is very 'melodic' and 'flowing', and lauryns voice carries on throughout the whole thing, and i feel like shes reaching out to me, telling me her story. when i listen to the song (or the beat) to say the least i think about a strong black woman wearing white, glowing, graciously walking the sandy beach, in the hot weather with the tide coming in to shore. being strong and letting go of her fears and problems. not to let them overcome her. in the video lauryns hair is very 'naturally' styled, and she walks with her head up regardless of er situation to show that she is strong. you can see the emotion in her facial expressions as she sings and that helps to convey the song to me. i no longer listen to the song and think about my past but i think about the beauty in the song, the life lauryn gave it as the words fell from her tongue

A Song That Matters

Pink Floyd's 'Goodbye Blue Sky' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0v07InoFiU - Music Video)
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58_S5e0AVU0 - Actual Song)

Haha... well, I wasn't expecting to do this, especially that I already talked about two of my more favored songs in terms of my connection to them in the last blog xD

Took a while, but I found one. This one doesn't have a personal connection to me. So... it’s a different approach to what I'm going along with this time.

Pink Floyd: a memorable band; in my opinion, probably one of the greatest bands of all time. They experiment and create the most chill-relaxing works out there.

With this song, the mood at the beginning of the piece begins like this: … There is the air, the birds, the rumbles of something up in the sky, and a child talking to his mother about seeing, "... an aero plane up in the sky."

It has this warm feeling about it, with the sounds of an acoustic to accompany it.

… Then of a sudden, it’s shadowed; the mood of the piece has soured. The mood of the piece shifted; it's got a chilled feeling about it… but as well breath-taking, based on how the song progresses.

The lyrics talk about how the depressions of war take over everything that's been treasured as joyful and wonderful… and destroying it all in this clouded world. No longer is the sunny, blue sky up above, but instead, it's cold, isolated... filled with the dull, gray planes of war, the dogs of war. It takes you into consideration about how war corrupts the security of our safety, the happiness you’ve cherished every day. There are people who are out there, fighting a war… civilians who have no part of it, trying to live their lives; all within the blanket of guns, planes, and death.

Watching the music video, it gets into your head to take notice of what war is. But then again, unless you’ve BEEN to war, or been behind the lines in your homeland in those terrible times, you’ll never understand. I never experienced it, but it doesn’t mean I would want to anytime soon.

Even if you don't watch the video... just listen to the song at least. As you listen to it, there something in there that plays within your head, about the feel of darkness. It showed us, the listeners, how the world we once lived in, was in shackles… in fear, of a danger that placed their lives in jeopardy. It weakens them, fragiles them… both mentally and physically.

… All in all, it's a wonderful song. Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t a happy, jolly song… but the beauty behind how this band delivers their message of what it's all about... is eye-opening, based on the meaning, the mood, and the message behind it. I highly recommend you stop what you’re doing, and listen to it right now.

Something recent

I song i recently heard probably a week ago I've actually grown to like more and more, I've heard this song once before in a DMX rap video which was just a rap remix at least in the chorus of this song. The song title is called "Ain't no sunshine" it was written by Bill Withers and is sung as a semi slow song. However the version I'm speaking on is actually a remix by a guy who's name i can't really remember however there is a video of his remix on YouTube. Basically it has a more jazzy feel to it and more instruments as well as a string guitar that plays which is pretty catchy. The reason I've come to like this song honestly is because of a recent comerical that has used it which sort of re sparked my interest in the song. The commercial that has used this song recently is for a video game called "Dante's inferno" basically the commercial involves a man chasing after his woman and literally jumping into the pits of hell to get her. all the while this song plays a remix of this slow song "ain't no sunshine" the lyrics and everything make perfect sense to this action packed commercial and it really got me thinking about some ideas of scripts I've been working on, attempting to flesh out solid action scenes to submit to a writing contest. Just listening to this song creates images of actions sequences that involve struggle and pain which in action/drama script writing is pure gold. So i guess that's my song of choice for this blog.

party in the usa....

I couldnt think of a good enough song to write about on here. So i'll write about a song i dont like, at all. Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus is the most annoying song ever. I don't like this song first because i think miley cyrus is a wanna be. The radio stations and bar's over play it so much. I tried warming up to it, but it's never going to happen. I don't like the beat because it's not catchy. The lyrics are not meaningful, and i dont care that her hands are up while the DJ is playing her song. I like songs with actual meaning and a message inside of them. Party in the USA has no message, it's a just some 16 year old singing about how she thinks she's cool. However, she is not. I have never seen the music video, so I don't know about the visual aspect, and I do not want to. The visual images I picture in my head, is Miley jumping around a club singing just being irritating. I can picture her the girl in the club everyone wants to fight, haha sorry but I just really don't like her, or her over rated excuse for a song. If this song had meaning or even a good tune, maybe I would change my mind- but i doubt it.

Tupac DEAR MAMA

A song that always stayed close to my heart and always make me think about the special moments in my life is dear mama by tupac. the reason the song really catches my attention because it makes me think about my mom and all the struggle she has been threw raising me as a single parent. over the years i have really came to see that my mom is a very strong independent woman. Through the hardest times in our life she held on strong and got us out of any situation. When hearing this song, it makes me want to go to my mom and thank her for everything because without her , i would not be at kent right now. i probably would be in jail or still on the streets. without her i dont think i would have stayed focus in school and in football and earned my scholarship to kent. When being young i thought my mom just use to scream and fuss but now i realize that she really care about me and loves me dearly. In the song tupac expresses his love for his mom and the things she did to raise them and i feel that i can relate to this song a lot. By my mom being my inspiration, i feel that i can overcome any trials and tribulations because i have seen her do it.. this song is a song that really matters to me because its very deep and touching. without my mom i wouldnt be the man i am becoming today.

Human Nature

Michael Jackson's "Human Nature" is a favorite song of mine. The lyrics and the mellody sooth the soul and give the listener an accurate description of the human mind. When michael Says things such as "electric eyes are everywhere" it depicts the eyes of the world that are everywhere always looking at you while your curiousity is unveiled. He also states that when people ask you why you feel such a way or act in such a manner to simply reply that its only "human nature". The song has powerful lyrics spread across a nice melodic beat that when you close your eyes you can imagine yourself walking around with these thoughts and questions in your mind about why we do the things we do. And in a response, a voice shouts out in the distance "its human nature". I ask you to go and listen to this song and close your eyes and reply and tell me what you see and envision within this powerful song.
Thinking about one song that matters to me most is sort of difficult. I had to think about it for a little bit but I think I have one i can narrow it down to. One of my favorite songs and the song I'm choosing to write about is "fake plastic trees" by radiohead. In auditory terms the song is just really great sounding and sort of sad and meaningful in my opinion. I would definitely say it is a song I could never get sick of. I love listening to it particularly when things aren't going so great and i decide to take a walk or go for a bike ride. Verbally the lyrics are different as opposed to some of the more popular songs you hear today where the lyrics aren't as important as the beat. It sounds stupid and cliche but there are actually meaning behind the words that come across to you. I personally get a visual when I listen to this song just because I have listened to it so many times, but I think that happens with any song you love. You have your own perception of it and it means something different and more important to you than it would to anyone else.

A song that matters

A song that matters to me is sultans of swing by Dire Straits. This song matters to me for both it's musical content and it's lyrics. Musically the song is just amazing. The way every instrument comes together is a work of genius. Mark Knopfler's guitar parts are incredible he is probably one of the most underrated guitar players ever. The song just has a very calm and soothing vibe. If I am in a bad mood this song can always make me feel better. Lyrically this song is really good to. It talks about how musicians do it for the music. The song talks about how music is important and thats why I like It. Overall this is probably one of my favorite songs.

One of My Fave songs

Juicy by Nototorius B.I.G is one of my many favorite songs. In this song he talks about the struggle of going from being poor to rich. I love the beat of this song. The video helps me like the song as much as I do. During the video there scenes that illustrate what he means and what he had to go through. He also speaks about how he didnt forget where comes from in the verse " Call the crib, same number, same hood, It's all good". This means a lot to me because I grew up in an urban city as well. I understand how it is to go without. But I will never forget where I came from because it shaped me to be the person I am today. This song keeps me humble. He also talk about how people doubted him for dropping out of high school, but he proved them wrong by becoming one the best rappers to ever touch a mic. He is the best in my opinion. He fought all odds and became a powerful icon.

MUSIC

There are a few songs that i dont like but the one that comes to mind is Love Story by: Taylor Swift. I like pretty much all her songs but this one. She is a good artist but the auditory of this song is boring and gets really annoying really quick. I am not a big fan of love songs of this sort so the verbal didn't help either. Her voice sounds good so it is not that. The visual is horrible. It is like fake looking and not something i would like to watch and it doesn't catch my eye. They could have made the video way better than what it was so that was also a let down too. I really like her as a person though so it has nothing to do with her its just really annoying. She could have made that song better by making it up beat but it seems like it just drangs on forever and ever. The radio over play it and every time i would change the station another station would have it on. She is country and they try to make it techno and put it on hit pop stations and that doesn't work well it just makes it worse and kind of make her sound bad. It is kind of a older song so they don't do that to much anymore but i hate it when i get in the car with my friends and they want to listen to it. They all like the song and they do it to make me mad. So i really just don't like anything about the song. I think they just need to get ride of this song all together. She is a really good artist just Love Story is just not one of my favorite songs.

We are the world...:)

The song that I'm currently obsessed with is the Haiti version of "We are the World". I loved the original version by Michael Jackson. I like this song mainly because of it's message. The message it portrays is that we are a part of God's family and it is our responsibility to help people that are in need. The new version is beautiful and the video is amazing. The first time I heard the song it brought tears in my eyes. The song brings together multiple artist that have amazing voices. All of the voices are different and different artist have different accents. The Haiti version also added a hip hop feel to the song. Towards the end of the song the beat changed and the hip hop and rap artist took over. The song has a very serious and emotional feel to it. It gives me chills and also makes me want to join the cause. The song is uplifting and makes you feel happy.

Great songs...

though my favorite or most liked song always changes because songs popularity fade. i can think of 2 great songs it is between for me. both of these songs have the same message and great lyrics. the first is lupe fiasco-hip hop has saved my life and kevin rudolf-i made it. i love both of these songs because they both tell a story of how a person came up from poor conditions and poverty of their family and simply by singing what they feel they come up from their poverty ridden lifestyles to become something great and in turn change everyone elses life around them. they also are inspiring any person trying to make it in the music business. as for the actual songs they both have amazing beats and fantastic lyrics. it is amazing how someone can make a song telling a great story and also having all qualities of a great song.

A song that matters

Romance, by Apocalyptica is riveting in my eyes. The song itself is entirely acoustic, as are most of the songs that they play and write. To help you understand why I chose this song I first have to describe the type of music they play. The band itself consists with four members, all of which play nothing more than string instruments. My enjoyment for this type of music exceeds all others which I am sure has something to do with the type of music I listened to growing up. Even though the band is a string quartet, the genre of their music revolves around orchestral rock.

My major enjoyment for this music is the empowering feeling is gives me while I listen to it. It is the music I will turn to when I am having a bad day for whatever reason. It has the kind of melody to it that just sends shivers down my spine and I love it.

With this specific song I love the imagery I think of for it and often times make the imagery a reality. in the beginning of the song its starts of tranquil, when you listen to it you can just imagine driving down a back road; no street lights and its a beautiful star lit night. up until the chorus that is. Once you get there it sounds like the intro for the bad guy in a movie.

My song? N.Y State of Mind

I recently stumbled upon a song by the famous (and controversial) artist NaS. The song is called "N.Y. State of Mind." NaS has an amazing talent that allows him to communicate a completely different style of life to people such as me. The song explains the hardships that go along with growing up in New York City and all the emotion that comes along with it. I have never been around guns, violence, heavy drug trafficking, or any one of those extremes. I grew up in what I would like to call safe America. It is hard for me to imagine what life would be like in the streets of New York City. The picture he vividly paints takes me there so I can see it, feel it, almost see the scene he so masterfully describes. To some it may seem like a silly rap song. But, if you really listen to it, you will see exactly what I'm talking about. It allows me to step into a life that is completely different than mine and live there for a couple minutes. It puts life and little things that go with it into perspective. The title of the song speaks volumes about what its effect has on me. This song is filled with what a lot of people would consider adult content, so I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. What I hear could be the complete opposite- but what I hear is poetry. It gives me a feeling of respect for people that deal with struggles like these, and it has such a funky beat to follow it.

Banned Music

Just an addendum to our brief discussion of banned music on Wednesday...

In the wake of 911, Clear Channel (media conglomerate; largest owner of radio stations in the U.S.), did not ban any songs...but they did provide radio programmers with a lengthy (150+) list of songs that might be unfit for radio after such a tragedy:

http://radio.about.com/library/weekly/blCCbannedsongs.htm

Some interesting and amusing choices in that list. Worth checking out.

Hearing is Believing

So when Phil was telling us that we had to listen to a audio essay, I was instantly not interested. I have never listened to a audio essay before, so I expected it to be super boring and dull. So I started listening to this essay and I was intrigued by the music. The first couple of times I listened to it though I had to replay the Chuck Berry clip over and over, it was very distracting. Anyways after listening to it about five or six times i got the message. When he makes the point "its not what you say sometimes, its how you say it." I instantly thought about how people analyze the way you say some things. Well what I am trying to get to is that you can always tell when someone is sad or mad. You can tell there emotions through the way they talk. I was also interested about the song from the fifties that was band. I had no idea that they even did that in the fifties. I mean now on radio or television the border for censorship is very vague. This song from the fifties does not even have any lyrics. I mean how can you ban a song with no lyrics, it does not say anything. I mean it definitely sounds like a dirty song, but how can you judge that. Anyways I absolutely loved this audio essay. I had no idea what was going to happen, but i was hooked right when i started to listen. This was one of the better assignments that i have had to do in a while.

M.O.M.M.

I can relate to Hornby because it is difficult to do things without music. When people ask me what kind of music I listen to, I also find it increasingly difficult to respond because I have a vast knowledge and selection of music I listen to which contains everything from Hip-Hop & R&B, to Pop, to Rock, and even music from other countries such as Japan. I also noticed within Prof. Sloan's audio essay that I was more attentive then then I would have been if it was without music and sound effects. Personally I believe that music makes everything sound and seem more enjoyable. However you must have the correct music for the correct times. This music will be kind of like background music for the listener. For example, when watching a movie, the music emphasizes the emotion and feeling within the moment. Like in a horror movie, the music drives the listener into a state of suspense, or in a romantic scene the music emphasizes the passion between whoever (or in some hilarious cases, whatever) the people may be. I am a living case of using background music in my daily life. I have music for ambiance and for various occasions whether I be walking alone, in class bored, or even if I'm walking with friends, I let music be the director of that which is my mind. My trademark is literally the headphone's I always seem to wear. I wear them not just to keep the music in, but to keep my focus, because without music I can't focus, and without focus, my mind is lost within the world. I am music and music is me.

Hearing Is Believing.

This audio clip was actually really enjoyable to listen to. I don't recall many classes that have used this method of learning, and it is most certainly a breath of fresh air. What intrigued me the most was the point made about "its not what you say sometimes, its how you say it." How many times have you sung along to your favorite song and fudged the words because you had no idea what they were actually saying? Its the feel, the rhythm of how the singer is putting tonality on the words. I also found it interesting that songs were banned in the 1950's just based on how they "sounded." The example used didn't even have lyrics- just the sound alone was too hardcore for the generation (My, how far we've come with censorship :/) . This is a classic example of how powerful audible sound can be. The radio does possess special qualities that allow us to use are imagination. You listen in, picture in your mind what they are talking about, and your creative senses are slightly tickled. Pretty cool. The power of sound is highly underrated, and greatly under appreciated. I'll hear a song that I listened to a long time ago, and it will take me directly back to that moment in time and paint the picture so vividly. Thats power. Nice dumb and dumber clip- that one actually got me to laugh out loud.

I listened to “hearing is believing” one time and went to write my blog. I tried to begin to write and could barely think of where to start. I knew what I had just listened to but it seemed like none of it really sunk in. I had to go back and listen to it a second time in order to figure out what I would write. I think it was difficult to begin writing because I didn’t actually see somebody talking our view the examples they had. Which goes back to the point made that we hear with our eyes and also see with our ears. I found that to be so completely true. You see it so much today with music and movies. It doesn’t matter how awful a song is as long as the person who is singing it looks good most people are happy. Sorry to the 85% percent of people this applies to, but you are shallow. The other point of the audio essay I wanted to address was the example of TV and radio. It’s something I’ve never really thought of before but after I did I realized how differently each medium sends their message. Radio leaves so much to the imagination it is unbelievable. Although we can create pretty much close to anything on TV today, it will never be the same as radio. Even listening to talk shows you begin to create and image in your mind of what the host looks like based on their voice. This essay pointed out so much of what is true around us today.

Hearing Is Believing and Hornby

The Hornby reading I can understand slightly better than the audio essay. I agree with the Hornby article that songs can remind you of a certain time in your life, or represent a feeling you have had at the time. There are many songs that I heard when I was younger, that as soon as I hear it now, that specific stage in my life gets relived. Its a song that I cant remember the name right now, but I know that everytime I hear the song it reminds me of the Summer time. It doesnt have any importance to me. But on the other hand there are songs that make me feel good and just lifts my spirits when I am having a bad day.

I think hearing something rather than reading it makes a difference. If you are reading something you cant determine what context the writer is writing in. For example, you can't tell if the writer is stressing a certain word or being sarcastic. Many of my own text messages are misunderstood because of this. I disagree with a song being a good song just because it sounds well. In order for me to like a song, I have to like what the artist is saying or his message that he or she is trying to get across. Everything that glitters isnt gold. Lyrics are very important to me. If a song has a nice beat but is saying non-sense, it has no purpose to me.

Hearing is believing

A good point here is that the way something is said to us helps us understand the mood of the teller; and perhaps, the teller himself. When he says that the lyrics in a song mean less then the music of the song, this can be both true and false. True because the sound of the song helps set the mood in ourselves. A bouncy song may make us want to get up and dance and a sad song may make us want to cry. TO an extent, he is saying the music of a song delivers across a more powerful message then the lyrics of the song. I can see why swaggering rumble was banned. In that time period music like that was obscene, just like Elvis's dance moves. The song just sounds dirty. The use of radio to deliver a message is better than t.v. On t.v, creativity only goes as far as the t.v. itself. on the radio, with the use of special effects alone, it gives the listener the ability to really use his imagination and picture what the scene would look like. this is true, if we see a picture of something without sound, we can imagine what the scene would sound like. In the same sense, when we here something on the radio, we can visualize what the scene would look like.

Is hearing really believing?!

After listening to “Hearing is believing” once, I had to go back and replay it a few times. I found it hard to grasp at first because there was nothing to look at, just the media player screen. I tried paying attention to what was being said but I think the music and sounds were just distracting. Anyways, after I listened to it a second time I understood the message. I liked the part where it said things said out loud have different interpretations then a text or email. When you read a text or email you just assume the tone the person is using and assume that’s what they mean, vs. speaking to someone in person. I think hearing believes because so many people connect through music. Every time I hear a song I relate it back to something that has happen to me. Deep lyrics that relate to me are commonly my favorite. But then again I like songs that simply have a catchy beat. I’ve looked up some song lyrics of songs I like and they turn out not to be that good, but the beat is awesome. I think that song that was outlawed had no reason to be outlawed. It didn’t sound dirty or dangerous at all. I’d like to see the radio stations back then here the rap songs popular now, and see what they think of that! I liked the radio advertiser’s argument..because the radio gives your imagination freedom. By just hearing the descriptors you paint a perfect picture in your head of a lake filled with hit chocolate..yum!

your love is the place where i come from

some say that the strongest thing tied to memory is the 'scent', a particular smell of some sort, but i believe it is the memory itself. its what you make it just like everything else in this life. i like when the author was referring to the song that had come to mind when he first went to the hotel for the event he was hosting. it seems like the more he thought about the song that was playing at the time, the more memories that ame to mind about that night. he was saying how some songs that he liked reminded him of certain stages of his life and then there were others that he simply liked just because of the song itself. he was able to own the songs. he was able to own them and differentiate between the ones he owned and the ones who owned his memory. that was something i never thought about. most songs that i like i like them because they remind me of something or someone, i havnt really thought of why else of a reson to why i like a song, or even know why i like a song other than the fact that it reminds me of something else. why cant i like the song for what its actually worth? that, i dont know.

another strong point the author touches on is the fact that most people who write, write to reach a deadline, or lenth that is required, instead of writing what they feel. this was something that took me by suprise, just to hear another author speak it. i was aught by my highschool writing teacher that you should never write to 'reach'. i guess that part wasnt so important but it stood out to me becasue i had never heard that before, most people especially English teachers stress the fact of writing to a minimum or maximum amount of pages but there were two people actually disagreed and thought that you should write only to explain or complete a thought

Response To Williamson piece

although in reading the williamson piece i didnt understand quiet what he meant, i understood after doing so again. at first i felt that he was speaking to me when he was making the point that some people go through articles or works of writing and strictly critique the work for its mechanics and errors or mistakes that were made instead of reading the actual article for its substance. i would have to say i do that quite often. most of the times when someone asks me to look over their work I dont go into the task simply looking for errors only, I like to read them for what their worth. i think the errors just pop ot at me.
i also like how williamson bought up the examples about the things that are "standard" and "nonstandard", when it comes to proper 'grammatics'. for example "I see where the President has said that, irregardless of what happens with the gasoline shortage, he'll still be against rationing, just like he has been in the past." In this example you have a person who speaks and seems as if they are educated and proper, where as in this next example, one may think that the person is of a low class and poorly educated, " I aint sure that he seen the polls before he said that. he dont seem to know that the people are fed up." Really what I think it comes down to is the fact of whats 'effective' and whats not.

Blog post word count

Some of you are coming in a bit shy of the 250-word requirement. I don't mind if you come in a few words shy of 250, but blogs less than 200 words that show little engagement with the actual assigned readings will only receive partial credit.

I appreciate that some of you are really starting to engage with the readings. Such efforts will not go unnoticed when it comes time to assign grades : )

Phil

The game is the fact that he deliberately made errors in his writing to see if we noticed them. He made about 100 of them.

Everybody has their own variation of defining an error. Some errors stand out to some people while others don't even notice them. Errors exist in so many places, that it is impossible for every person to identify the same ones and respond to them the same way.

He located errors in the reader locating errors.

He wanted to make the point that nobody seemed to notice that E.B. White made an error. He is amazed by the fact that the guy that notices errors in others writing didn't notice it in his own.

ERRORS

We think the game means that it is satisfiying to read through a paper and try and pick out the errors to try and get through the paper that you are reading more easily and satisfying. The main point that Williams is trying to say about errors is that it is more like a personal belief of what is subjective and what is relative. If someone is to talk a certain way they would be more incline to write a certain way. In williams article he was trying to focus on the readers than the writers becuase the readers is always the one saying that it is not right and what not. grammarians violate there own rules in ways becuase its all based on their experience of the person becuase they might not agree with someone else on the way you spot these errors.

Alexis, kris, Luke, Bree, Doug

Williams Errors (In Class)

1. The "game" he is talking about at the end of the article is referring to him actually purposely inserting errors throughout the paper. You don't think to even notice errors because he is writing about how people stress errors in stuff that they write and would think he would not use errors.

2. His point is that people focus more on the smaller errors and stress these far too much. People don't focus on the actual writing itself and what is being said. He is also saying that everyone has a different definition of what an error is and this is based on what they were taught and how they review an essay in general.

3. He locates the error in both the writer and the reader. The writer learns the error and puts it into a paper. At the same time, the reader locates the errors in the paper. Everyone sees a different error in the paper because of what they were taught.

4. He wants to show that nobody has perfect writing. Everyone makes errors. Most people look pass these errors simply because the writer is a published writer. The published writers do not even notice their own errors sometimes.

Cameron, Brad, Abby, Rachel, Laumara

Williams- Autumn Ware, Calvin Tiggle, Allison Bishop

- The game tht Williams talks about refers to hw we arent quick to respond to errors we make the when putting miss used words (such as "less") in front of nouns

- You dnt really notice what is wrng unless u "dig" and "nit pick" at the piece at hand. Most of the time we pay more attention to the context of what is being read rather than the content, so simple grammatical errors are often missed.

- The reader: because they want you gt something out of what your reading, nt critique the paper

'Errors' In-Class Assignment - Joe

1) I believe what he's talking about, is the reference to using rules as a guideline when it comes to writing, but we can make exception out of those rules. In other words, we can 'break the rules'.

2) That everyone's interpretation of an 'error' is different from one another, based on one's writing style and approach.

3) He looks at errors through the writer's perspective, but then thinks about the readers themselves who look at the paper, and what they think is correct, and what isn't

4) Because he's trying to prove a point through the writers who developed those rules, and counteracting of what they suggest, by looking at an example of them breaking their own guidelines.

Katie, Alex, and a Mr. Williams

The game Williams is talking about was the act of him inserting errors into the paper purposely for the reader to find.
He is saying errors are less objective and more subjective. They depend on the person editing them. What looks like an error to one person might not be an error to somebody else.
He locates errors in both the writer and the reader because the error had to be in the mind of the writer and the error also had to be in the mind of the reader that caught it.
He is reiterating his point that the error is subjective.

Hearing is believing

When finding out that it was another audio clip and a reading i had to hear, i thought to myself not again, but when realizing it was about music i jumped to excitement. When listening to audio clip and reading the article, a lot of things they were saying was true. Music has an effect on us in a lot of ways, from communicating with other people to relating to our own personal lives. When listening to music you can also relate to your past experiences in your life. It also makes you think about the old great times. When i listen to music i seem to think back on old times . i think of old problems in my family, my relationships, things me and my friends use to get into and also my high school football moments and achievements. I think music influences the world to much. sometimes people do things just because how they are feeling while listening to a song. Music is a great way to connect with yourself and knowing who you are especially when you relate to the music you listen to. also i agree when it was talking about that things are based on the way things sound rather than what they say . i agree because i can hear a nice beat and love the song and dont really care what they are saying at all. If a song doesn't have a great beat then i am really not going to be interested. I hate trying to actually listen to a song without a good beat. That what makes the song and make people actually want to hear the song.

Hearing Is Believing

This was by far my favorite "reading". I can relate to this so much cause it has to deal with music. Music is my passion and I knew exactly what both pieces were talking about.

In the actual reading, I can relate to how the writer says that songs can take you back with memories. When you hear a certain song, you can remember where you were and what you were doing that exact moment when you heard it. You also remember many small details that you would have never remembered if it weren't for that song. I hate to sound like that wimpy "emo" kid but I know there are a lot of songs that when I hear them I remember my ex-girlfriend, and remember being places with her and hearing a certain song playing.

When hearing older songs, It reminds of certain times in high school or even middle school. It reminds of fun times hanging out with my friends or maybe it reminds me of where I was the first time I had ever heard that song.

I really enjoyed the audio essay. I thought the sound quality was perfectly fine. I thought it was very intriguing. I really liked the part about how that instrumental was banned, simply because it "sounded" dirty or whatever. The great thing about music is that this is true. You can make a song sound "dark" simply by music you write. Look at Black Sabbath for example. When they came out their sound was so dark and so heavy. Just by the first few chords you could that this band was "dark". Then Ozzy's piercing vocals came in and it was the perfect fit for this new sound that was coming from people's radios.

I also liked the point that was made about how the lyrics don't necessarily have to "deep" or whatever to make the song. As long as they are delivered in a rhythmic way or a melodic way than thats all that matters sometimes in a song. The lyrics that are the most remember are usually ones that really aren't that deep. People just get the melody or rhythm of how they are delivered stuck in their head.

Hearing is Believing!

When I saw that the blog this week was audio clip I got very excited. I'm an auditory learner, and this audio clip proved to me why I would rather listen to something than read it. When reading you never really know how something is being said unless you have descriptive clues to tell you. When listening to something it's a lot easier to understand the mood of what is being said by the tone, expressions, and all around atmosphere. I thought this blog was very interesting and entertaining. It's crazy how someone can speak just through a song with no lyrics. I also think it's awesome how your imagination can run wild when you are just listening to an audio clip but then when you see it on television or something visual you can only imagine what you see. With just listening to something you can get different impressions and understand what someone means, yet you can let your imagination play it out how you want it to be. So, overall I really enjoyed this audio clip and it did back up my points of why I am and prefer to be an auditory learner.

Hearing Is Believing!!

The blogg was ever entertain when I first listened to it. So much so tht I kinda forgot Y I was even supposed to be listening to it in the first place.:) Bt the second time around I listened more carfully and I agree. Most of the world today is based more on the way things sound rather the the actuall content of what is being said or heard. When looked at closer most of ththings we do in everyday life invovle some type of sound. Wether it be to futher elaborate on a situation, or sound is the onlii medium through which the message is percieved. For instance when the song "Jonny Be Good" was used as a example of jus hw something is said makes it sound even better. when u first listen to the lines u kinda thnk "maan this song is deep" "and what he's saying is important" whe in reality all chuck Berry is singing about is where tht Johnny dude is frm. Another good point brought up in the essay is, when onlii sound is provided, its gives you a wider range of Imaginitive idea to choose frm. You arent limited to onlii one thing you can picture. And example of this was when On-air comedian Stan Freebird (i thnk thts it?) described the whole lake michigan scene being like a big "sunday". The way he describes the things as they happen, and the sound effects wen hear make it easier for us to picture it in our minds, hw ever we see fit. Where as if we were to see this on televison there is already a set image to go off of.
Overall I thought the eassay make some very good key pints about hw sound is precieved and hw it is the most common medium used. Im my opinion sounds jus seems to tie everything together.

hearing is believing

When i first started listening it was kind of hard to follow along becuase i would rather read what im blogging about unless there is pictures becasue ifollow along better. The part where it was talking bout the music and how it can say something without words is pretty much true but everyone thinks differnt on what it is talking bout using there imagionation. I relate most things to me and try to put it into how i feel about it and not as a whole group. The picture thing was my favorite part becuase when i read i always put a picture to what i think is happening. I love to imagion things happening. But then there wil be a movie that comes out for the book i read and it was nothing like i thought the people would look like and how things were. It kind of diappoints me. When i read dear john this past week and went and seen the movie i was very disappointed becasue it was not as good as i pictured it to be so it let me down. But media is the message. When you hear something on the radio you would rather do that then the tv believe it or not becuase you can put what you think to it. There are good commercials you wil never forget just because of the pictures they show you but you can do alot with the radio and music

Hearing is believing

When I found out that this weeks reading was going to be another audio clip I really didn't know how to take it. Not that I hate audio clips but I would much rather read something than listen to it. When you read something you can go back and reread if something doesn't make sense but with audio it is much more of a hassle to go back and find the spot where you were having trouble. I did like this clip a lot though, it had ideas that I had not really thought all that much about. I thought it was sort of interesting how an instrumental song could get banned. The fact that the music was powerful enough to convey a message without even having to say anything is a real testament to its writer. I never really thought of the music as having that sort of power over someones emotions that's really pretty cool if you sit and think about it. I also like the idea of radio having capabilities that the T.V really could never have. There are so many things that could be imagined that could never be acted out or put on T.V but just by using certain sounds you can get people to imagine. I really liked the music choices though, I thought they were all really good. I especially liked the use of the Ramones and Chuck Berry songs its good that there still appreciated after all these years. All in all I thought there was a lot to learn in the audio essay.

Hearing Is Believing/"Your Love"

Well, this morning, I decided on getting down with finishing this reading assignment for homework.

...I gotta say, quite different with how this assignment went, comparing it to the past few reading assignments. As far as the interest went with this, I was more into this than the past few assignments (not to saying that the others were bad!). How I'm going to respond to these two works (the short reading, and the audio recording) will be mixed up, so the focus on this will not be jumping from one to another, but meshed up, because I saw connections between both assignments.

Reading, "Your Love Is The Place Where I Come From", it's ironic, from hearing the author's perspective, that I actually do relate songs to things about my life, connected by the lyrics, the time I've listened to it, or what it reminds me of. I've heard other people making this similar connection before, but this finally hit into my head about how I look at music at times.

Two examples of this - "How To Disappear Completely" by Radiohead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAF8D0ugyVk) is a song that's perhaps my favorite (if not, one of the handful I love), because of how it relates to me, how I feel isolated with life's problems I deal with, and how I want to run away from life... like the song understands me. ...But not only that, but the feel of the music attracts me to it: the cold, but yet warm feeling of being wrapped within the guitar's chords, the piano's cries, the drums, all of the instruments that creates this atmosphere I could look at the world around me... and be wrapped within. So it's not only the lyrics, but the singing behind it, and the instruments that create it.

Metallica's 'One'
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXPkmIwwobA) I can relate through when my grandfather passed away. I've listened to it over and over again, following a phone call from my parents early one winter's morning years ago, listening to it after noticing what happened, and throughout most of the days afterwards. The lyrics connect with the event that occurred, but also the mood of the music, the guitars; all creates this world around me, envelopes me within a different mood of how to look at things around me, a different painting.

So, your ears can help in painting a picture in your head. It isn't only the lyrics that can create a message, but the music behind it. As Mr. Sloan mentioned, lyrics are a minor thing to worry about; it's the music that matters. The music itself is the core message to how it creates such a feel to the listener, different in each one's perspective of it.

About half a year ago, my look upon instrumental bands has got more of my respect to just listening to the mood of a piece more; by this, it also connected me better to classical music. I've been inspired to writing creative pieces and mini-compositions on my guitar, by just listening to the instruments alone. A good example of this is 'Explosions in the Sky'; if you have time, this is a song that can help you understand the importance of the instruments themselves
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeaXvVLuSJw). The message within the music is there, to create something in your head, let it be inspiration to writing some lyrics, a painted world in your head to draw, whatever.

Moving on, in the 'Hearing Is Believing' audio, this is connected along with what I've said. Lyrics are not always the important part of a song, but what's behind them, supporting them. The lyrics are just the same as any other piece of the song: a part of an ice cream sundae.

Ironically, it reminds me of the part in the audio that used audio and sound effects to convey a picture... of when Lake Michigan was created as a hot chocolate. The water was hot chocolate after being drained of water, people got the whipped cream on, and then a plane carried a 10 lb cherry to finish the job. How this worked, through the ears alone, painted our imagination of the whole thing; if everybody were to re-create that picture in a drawing to show everybody else for comparison, everybody's would be different (maybe not a whole lot, but some).

I agree that the ears within music, can reach to one's creativity, in a way that television, art work, whatever, can't provide.

The beauty about each of these forms of expressions is awing. Music can creates a picture, television can help motivate ideas, art work can help one be inspired... so much that each of these forms can provide. There are numerous possibilities about where they can all take you, and each way provides it differently in how you look at it, how you feel, how you create. It's like comparing the first 'Harry Potter' to the movie; sure, the movie's great, but the book's got it all (only because of the limitation); when I read the first book LONG ago, the interpretation of how I looked at it in my head, was WAY different than the movie.

... And that's pretty much it. I might have gone off-topic with the discussion, and WAY overboard with it! I guess it's just myself in a 'writing phase' perhaps : )

I hope I flew with this for the most part xD

Oh, and by the way, the audio assignment sounded pretty good! ... Unless it's because I'm in the Dom right now, I thought the audio was pretty clean in terms of the recording! I might wanna copy of this, because it was a very good job!! : )
