Google making us dumb

Carr's mind used to naturally read pages of information but now his mind drifts after a page or two. Now his mind just wants to get to the point of what he is reading because he's used to googling everything and getting his answer in a few minutes. His mind wants instant gratification instead of searching an entire article for one piece of information. Carr thinks the benefits of the internet is being able to find information much quicker. Instead of spending days researching and finding something, you can type what you need into google and the answer will pop up in seconds. Carr explains how a medium can shape its users. We are reading more than the 70's and 80's because now we are texting instead of watching TV. The medium of texting is shaping texters to interpret the messages. Carr is saying google is everywhere and we are relying too much on it. It is making us stupid because without Google we would have to do all the extra work we are trying to cut out. We depend on Google for all the questions we need answers to. Without internet search engines we would be lost.

Is Google making us stupid...

1. I thnk when Carr says tht his mind is changing, he means tht te way his mind takes in information is changing. he uses he example of hw he used to be able to gt into a good book and nw it is harder for him. I thnk this means for him tht he is so used to the internet summarizing and bring in info more quickly tht the lengthiness and long reads of a book, are as interesting anymore.

2. One benefit of the internet tht Carr mentions is research. He state tht research papers and projects tht could takes weeks of bookwork to find out, can nw easily be sereached in Google and the info you will every need frm a book, appears right before you in various links.

3. A medium can shape its users in the sense tht it can change thier total out look on the way they do things. for example it can change hw you expect thing to wrok (like reading a book).

4. I thnk Carr is afraid tht google can give a sense of false intellegence in a way.??

In class: Is google making us stupid

1. What Carr means when he says the mind is changing is that because we have moved into the internet age, we read more frequently, but it is more difficult to do it in large time frames.

2. A benefit of the internet is that information for researching is much easier to come across and access. Another benefit is that we are reading more than we did in the past because our main technological pass time was watching televisions, and now it's using the internet. Another benefit mentioned is that it makes thinking easier.

3. The internet shaped this user:

"Bruce Friedman, who blogs regularly about the use of computers in medicine, also has described how the Internet has altered his mental habits. “I now have almost totally lost the ability to read and absorb a longish article on the web or in print,” he wrote earlier this year."

4. Carr's main concern with google's omnipresence is that google is thinking for us and we are not doing enough mental thinking of our own.

Another thing to add is that it is of big companies' best economic interest to drive us to distraction. They know how we think and they try to manipulate us so they can make money.

Allison Bishop & Patrick Katusin

Google

1. He does not really concentrate on the article's he reads now like he used too. He said he used to spend a lot of time when reading but now its hard for him to concentrate after a couple pages.

2. The internet makes his research easy and it takes minutes, where as it used to take him hours in a library with a stack of books and There is immediate access to an infinite amount of information.

3. His mind expects him to take in the information by the way the internet "distributes" it.

4. That we will rely just on Google for information that we want and need, and we will not actually use our brains. We will become somewhat "lazy" because it is so easy for us to get information from Google.

Cameron,Emma, Rachel, Laumaura

Katie Alex Joe and a Mr. Stanley Cooper

1. The way he processes information is changing. Rather than being able to read long prose he is only able to read short passages. He seems like he gets the information faster when he uses the internet as his medium to collect his information from.

2. As stated in answer one the benefits of the internet are that he gets his information faster and its easier then getting his information from a book.

3.One of the examples he uses is one of his friends is no longer able to read Leo Tolstoy''s classic "War and Peace," a task that would have been simple for him before the emergence of blogs and the internet.

4.His primary concern in that if we rely on search engines like google then we are no longer using our brains to process things, we become dependent on the internet.

stay gold pony boy, stay gold.

Carr

1) The deep reading that he used come naturally has become a struggle. It's harder for him to read long pieces of information now. Before he could read a lot and his mind would be engaged the entire time.

2) Its a universal medium of information. Its also fast and easy.

3) It's changing the way they think and for some its changing the way they write. It is harder for people to stay engaged when they read articles online. We are not really learning anything, just getting quick answers!

4) He feels like it was tinkering with our minds and if we didn't do anything to control it then Google is going to run our lives. We are not going to know anything.

bree & calvin:
when carr says his mind is changing hes meaning that he doesnt look at things the way he used to. he used to be patient with his readngs and take time to understand them but now he just wants everything 'fast' and in a rush.
his need for wanting things in a fatser easier manner is changing
benefits of the internet are that its faster and theres more things u want or need at ur fingertips and you dont have to do much to get them.
the medium can shape its users according to carr bc...'the Net seems to be doing is chipping away my capacity for concentration and contemplation. My mind now expects to take in information the way the Net distributes it: in a swiftly moving stream of particles. Once I was a scuba diver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a Jet Ski.'
Overall we use computers to understand everything thats going on instead of looking into things for ourselves with our own understanding of their worth...basically we rely on other tools to understand in stead of trying to self learn and explore things for ourselves

Just KGB it

I don’t feel like Google is making us stupid because in a sense when we have to search for something and we go by means of Google we learn the information in which we are searching. A good example is that the other day I was watching the Cavs and they had on green headbands and I wanted to know why they were wearing them and my roommate didn't know either, so we checked Google. So now thanks to Google we know the answer to that question. Yes in a sense Google can make us stupider because instead of learning information to avoid having to use Google, we use it to obtain things we are too lazy to remember or search out for ourselves. A simple way of replacing the overuse of Google is by watching an informal TV show or reading a book about the topic as opposed to checking Google for every thing we don’t know. Google is not the only means that they have made us stupider, other sources such as AskJeeves.com, Bing.com, and even the newly created KGB can also make us stupider. For example, KGB makes it easier to obtain information quicker because they claim that there’s aren’t any links, just answers. By using this tactic, the more impatient people in the world can get the short fact that they need to know quicker and without going through the hassle of learning the facts around the topic they are asking. In conclusion, Google may make us stupider, but there are other sources that are worse then Google when it comes to making us stupider.

youtubbee

I believe that you tube can make you a star whether it is just everyone looks at your video or if are really good at something and you actually become famous. Justin Bieber which is my favorite artist he started on youtube and was discoverd by usher. Taylor swift also started on youtube. I watch fred videos and it is just a kid being dumb and it is the funnest thing to watch and he is just a normal kid doing it. He is now famous because of this and it is just him being really dumb. I like youtube so i can watch videos and it is kind of addicting. I'm not sure if i agree on it making everyone famous because anyone could do half the stuff that happens on youtube but i guess its what you make of it.

google

i do not think google makes us stupid, i think its just a new form of technology that people are becoming more fond of, just as they did when calculators were first invented, computers, and cell phones. im sure many people thought those things were going to make the world stupid but they've adapted to them and the change they bought with it. the new forms of technology just make it more simple to do the same things as before but with less time and in an easier fashion. its where the world is going, and truthfully for those who do feel it mkes us stupid, Id rather be stupid staying up with technology, then letting it pass me by and not being able to compete at all (in life) especially in the workforce. google is just a search engine people can use to look up different websites, pictures and other things you could imagine searching for on the web.

Youtube.

Youtube is among the likes of google, amazon, and other great internet tools. Youtube has changed how people express themselves. Anyone these days can upload a short video off of almost any recording device and become a "Youtube Sensation." All in all, I seem to think its a pretty cool tool. It keeps us from being bored while surfing the web, and can serve as a great search engine if your looking for specific music or film clips. I notice that even professors (Right, Phil?) use it as part of their lectures to help students relate to specific ideas and concepts.

Along with Youtube comes another problem though- should everyone have that power? Some of the vidoes I see are completely dumb and pointless these days, even offensive in some cases. Since there is no way to moderate it, I don't really use it anymore. I'm old school, I miss the days of landlines and green screen phones.

Youtube!! Blah?!?!

I often use youtube for just a way to take up time and for boredom. For example I really want a Bichon Frise so I look up videos of Bichon Frise puppies. It sounds cheesy, but I enjoy it. I think people post videos on here because so many people use this service, and they might have a chance of getting noticed. There has been many cases where people have been on tv because of a video that they had posted, or even became a famous star. So when the reading says that they are not famous, I can disagree with that point.

Youtube can be helpful with tutorials as well. When I was looking for a new cell phone, I wanted to see how it actually looked and the features of it. People post videos of showing you what the cell phone looks like and what it is capable of so you are not left out in the dark. This really helped me because I do not like to spend money on something that I cant really benefit from.

As far as the modes in the Kress reading, I think signs have a great effect on how you can perceive something. Certain fonts and colors play a role in attracting you to an establishment. For example a restaurant shouldnt have cursive writing in the name. It isnt very easy to read. Also a coffee shop wouldnt have bright colors such as yellow or pink on the walls. Earth tones such as green or brown will be a better fit. Advertising really plays a part and after reading this I became more aware of it.

youtube!

I think the reason so many people watch YouTube videos is because anyone can upload a video. When you watch the videos of people doing stupid funny things you can relate to it. I’m sure everyone has a video of their friends doing something ridiculous and it’s hilarious to watch. So when people put their videos up on youtube its entertainment, just like TV. The article said that famous youtube video makers are not recognized as real celebrities. I’d have to argue with that portion of the article. There is this kid named Fred on youtube who makes funny pointless videos. He is very widely known and I’ve even seen a shirt with his face and name on it at Spencer’s in the mall. I think youtube is popular enough in this age that youtube stars could become known in the real media. I thought it was funny that the 4 video’s the book picked out for examples were all dudes doing their videos alone. It just makes it seem like they’re nerds and have nothing better to do except have an imaginary light-saber battle. And what was with the old man dancing? I had to laugh again when the article mentioned how would you feel it that was your dad? I can understand kids and teens posting youtube videos for enjoyment. However, a middle aged man? I guess youtube is just like national TV for amateurs. People can pick and choose who they want to watch. Everyone who posts videos are like the average joe but I do think that some of the youtube stars are well enough known to become celebrities, they all aren’t “Anti-Stars.”

YOUTUBE

After reading this i was really keyed into it because im a fan of youtube. I admit many people post many stupid things on there just because there bored and have to much time on there hands but some of it is pretty funny. youtube has became very known and popular and is now one of the best things the internet has to offer. I think alot of the things the author was saying is true. Basically youtube celebraties can be called an anti star. the reason of that is once you become world wide known over youtube then basically many people in the world knows who you are. many people have built success and careers just by posting many videos on youtube. In my opinion youtube is something great to have because you find many things you are looking for on there and wild things that you have never seen. For example a 6''8 high school senior who is a girl dunking the basketball with no problem at all or the man who ate the most hot dogs in a contest. there are many things you can see on youtube from sports highlights to music videos. Over all youtube is just something to keep us watching different videos while we are bored on our spare time. Youtube could arguely be called one of the greatest things ever being created on the computer.

Cyberstuff Stuff

I feel as though the internet is a nice place to stay and/or hang out, but not a good place to stay. Lets be honest, yes the thought of always being around your friends thanks to the wonderful means of skype and facebook and twitter are nothing short of great, but ask yourself this, do you really want to always be seen by everyone? No matter if its a wall post or a comment, little things likt this everyone an see, whether they are a friend or not. And in the end do you really want to live in a place where you dont even feel safe?

In life we have protection suh as locks on our doors and safes to store valuable information, who's to say that if we live online a burglar (hacker) wont steal it from us without our knowing? The thought of having unlimitied potential to do whatever whenever may be nothing short of great for most, but for some others it can also be overwhelming. Someone like me only uses the internet for so much and after that i rarely use it as much as others may.

On the positive side, it would be a very convenient place to stay. Your always able to do whatever at a moments notice, You an always keep in contact with close friends in case you need them, and you are always free at a moments notice to help if help is needed. Some may feel isolated because they have very few friends who are always online, but others may have countless amounts of friends from next door neighbors, to new york buddies. In the end, the internet is a place that keeps people connected, but i dont think it should be a place to stay in for an extended amount of time.

cyberspace living

when i first tought of the question'is the internet a nice place to live' i was thinking no because of all the drama that gets sarted over the internet like fights, relationship issues such as lies and breakups, and nosey people that want t be your firend just to be in your business. then i realized that those are the basic things that happen here in the reality of our lives today. so i guess living in cyberspace wouldnt be that bad, we might look a little funny but thats okay with me!
i think that there would be alot more people who are sick fron the many viruses that pass through the internet and many crashes done to their communities becasue of an overload of info but for the most part it might be okay to live there.

INTERNET NICE PLACE TO STAY

In many cases yes i do think the interner would be a nice place to stay. The reason of that being is because everything is on the internet. you wouldnt have a problem finding anything you need or want. the only thing that is a set back to staying in the internet world is pop ups. Many times pop ups create viruses and a lot of distractions. without pop ups the internet would probably be the persfect place to stay. Also when needing to find a long lost friend or someone you dearly miss, you could do so easily. You could aslo meet many other people that you probably connect very well with. this would be very easy to do so knowing that you have facebook, myspace, twitter, and chat rooms. i think from this, the world is interacting more with each other. in a way the internet probably would be a better place than the world is today. i think less violence would occur and alot of people would be more happy than they are now. in my opinion this would be a great place to stay.

internet a nice place? doubtful.

The internet is struggling to remain a safe place for anyone these days. Along with the internet came internet molestation, (gross i know, but its valid and you know it.) and virtual identity theft. You have to be cautious of where you go and what information you share. If you choose to own a facebook account, its probably a good idea to be responsible with your pictures and information- future employers and criminals may be stalking your profile. This isn't to say that facebook and myspace aren't great, because they can be a nice place to chat and communicate with you friends and family.

In terms of whether these platforms for communication have made us more social as opposed to isolated, it really depends on the individual. Personally, I do my best to briefly check my messages, or chat with a close friend for a short time then promptly log off. Its entirely possible for people to stalk pages and roam endlessly through public profiles, especially for those who struggle in terms of face-to-face socialization. These forms of virtual chat allow people to mask their true personalities and create different, more appealing (at least to themselves) personalities. Hell, I think facebook is great if you use it right, but it takes away the reality of talking to someone in person and learning how to really communicate. Remember calling people on their home phones?

Internet? Place to stay?

I do not think that the internet is a nice place to stay. It is a pathetic way to replace the real world., or reality. On the flipside, the internet is very helpful in many forms. You can use it as a way to shop, a way to stay informed about what is going on around the world. It just keeps you connected about current events.

The internet makes everything quick and easy. If you are ever in a situation where you need to find something out real quick, just search google or yahoo and problem solved. Social sites such as Facebook and Twitter are virtual communities. I have accounts of both. Facebook used to be selective in who they allow to get an account. I think they should go back to this because children now have Facebook pages!! I dont take facebook seriously at all. If you are my friend on there, it doesnt mean we are actually friends in real life. That is why I say these virtual things are a pathetic way to replace the real thing.

Yes people can stay connected this way but to what extent? There is no face to face interaction going on. It is sorta like hiding behind something because people can portray themselves completely different on the web than in real life.

Chat rooms serve as a way of quick communication. Not so much as an everyday realtionship. All of these are informal ways of communication. There is nothing like that good ole fashioned phone call!

CYBERSPACE as PLACE

The internet, just like everything, in moderation is a nice place to stay. It truly does connect people. For instance, my childhood neighbor who I hadn't seen in 12 years is my friend on facebook. I actually crossed paths with her over spring break, but didn't realize it was her until after she posted pictures and I recognized her other friends that I had met down there.

Though the whole point of the internet is to stay connected, it indeed can end up isolating people. It can isolate people from the real world. Instead of kids playing card games with a visibly tangible friend, now they can play cards online with a stranger in Moscow if they want to. You do lose a sense of fellowship with people that way by not actually being with them.

Cyberspace as a Place

No. I don't think that the internet would be a nice place to stay. We as a people have lost emotion and we lack communication. The internet is a nice way to communicate but it shouldn't be the only way to communicate. But many of us are guilty of using it to frequently. I would not want to live in communities like facebook, twitter, and chat rooms! These people are connected by status updates and random bits of information that people share. The chances of miscommunication are extremely high on the internet. The best way to communicate is face to face. The best way to live is with other people! Human interaction is very important. You don't have that in the virtual world. Websites such as facebook and twitter do encourage a sense of place and connection. But it is limited. You can talk to people but it's not that personal. Having a phone conversation with a person is better than just tweeting with someone. Having a conversation face to face is the best way to communicate in my opinion. Then there is a flip side. These websites also encourage isolation because you are sitting in an area on the computer away from human interaction. You do take part in virtual interaction but like I've said, it's not the same! These websites encourage isolation because it's just you and your computer. The internet also has a negative aspects. There is a lot of spam and nonsense information on facebook and twitter. Your accounts can get hacked and your name can be misrepresented. The virtual world is just as cruel as the real world! So I would much rather stay in the real world. It's funny that I say this, because I'm constantly on facebook. I always have a facebook tab open when I am on my computer. If I'm not on my computer I have my phone connected to facebook. I text people more than I call them. I facebook chat with a friend then talk to them on the phone! It's actually kinda sad. I think I'm gonna start calling people more often and talk to them in person more. Because the best way of communication is face to face! Human interaction...not virtual.

internet home

i think that the internet is probably the greatest place ever made. it is a good place to stay as it is now like you can be safe at your home and be in the internet in your mind. if the internet was a real place it would e probably the worst place in the world. for how much junk is on the internet you would probably die. if we had to deal with all the spam mail in for real. then our mailboxes would have to be as big as a house. all the viruses would surely kill us if we didnt have a firewall around us at all times. there would be almost no law enforcement and everyone would need to fight for themselves. but there are a lot of great things on the internet information wise. but there are a lot more bad things you just need to watch what youre doing. so the internet CAN be a great place to stay as long as you know what youre doing.
for social communities the internet is great to keep in contact with others. but there are always exceptions, things such as viruses and online predators can easily make everything very bad making it a bad place to stay. but like i said as long as you know what to avoid and how to avoid it you can have a great time on the internet. maybe there should be a class that informs people about what to avoid on the internet.
in a way social sites such as facebook do cause isolation but not totally. people in reality are alone sitting by themselves and talking to who knows on the other side. but they are also communicating with others. people do need to have actual human interaction or they will be a freak so to speak. they will not know how to react to other people. they will become a social reject.
so the internet is a great place to go but not necessarily a great place to stay, for long at least.

"a nice place to stay..."

This statement kind of confused me. I thought about the phrase with other websites that I use such as Facebook and Twitter. People who like to go on the internet and have webpages of themselves sometimes have a different opinion of their favorite website. My favorite website to visit is Facebook. I have Twitter on my Blackberry so I don't really go on the actual website because everyone's tweets get sent to my phone. When I was in high school my favorite website was MySpace. Now, I probably go on myspace once every for month just because I remember I still have an account. When it comes to search engines I prefer Google. So I guess you could say i prefer to "stay" at Google. When I read "a nice place to stay" I think of an advertisement for a hotel. I guess this could mean a place where you are comfortable. I am comfortable at Google because it's very simple with very little advertisements and clutter. I prefer Facebook over MySpace because a lot more of my friends are on Facebook and it's a lot simpler to manage.
Usually when someone uses a search engine they tend to go back to the same one every time. If someone is use to typing in information in Google, then they are more likely to go to Google every time. They start to get use to where everything is and the features that Google has over the features Yahoo may have. If a professor asked me to use Yahoo instead on Google as a search engine it will most likely take me longer to find the information compared to if I were using Google.
When if comes to websites where you are comfortable at, I definitely think that there is a connection of isolation. If I were to meet someone for a different country that was here to visit for a trip and they had a Facebook, I would most likely ask them to be my friend on Facebook. From there I am more likely to stay in touch with that person and see how their life is going. If Facebook didn't exist, I would probably never see or hear from that person again. The internet and new websites have definitely kept the world connected.

nice place to live?

All of the virtual communities are connected by people with common interests or wanting to meet more people. In my opinion i think that facebook is a great place but wouldn't be where i wanna stay. It is nice to get on there for a few minutes but then when you stay on there for hours it becomes not such a great place. It sidetracks you from things you could be doing or going out to do something rather than just sitting on the computer. Chat rooms are not a good place to be because you don't really know who you are talking to and if one thing leads to another you could be in danger somehow. They all share a sense of connection because you are talking to people and could be sharing ideas and what not. The Internet is really not a nice place to stay because it keeps you in from doing things that are more worth your time. It is all kind of pointless to get on these things because it doesn't better you or help you with anything. Twitter is just dumb! You just write on there what you are doing all the time. if you just sit on there all day then you are reading about what other people are doing and i dont know how that could be fun. I just think the Internet is a good place to visit but not stay.

A place to stay

If the internet was a place to stay i think it would be very interesting to say the least, if there were city blocks within the internet called facebook or myspace i think it would create a whole new dynamic that never existed before in society. For one i think the community as a whole would be more dynamic and interesting everybody would have something to say about everything which i think would also be its most annoying aspect of living someplace inside the internet. People would openly talk to you about subjects that should be kept anonymous. I think the foundation of the internet and social networking sites being as popular as they are. Are built on the foundation of anonymity, meaning if people don't know you then you can say anything you want without consequence. Everybody is connected however inside the community because they all relate to each other by what they all represent. So if I'm living on the social networking block then everybody on the block can at least relate to me on that aspect. So we can all feel at home but at the same time separated by our opinions and feelings on "life". Throw in internet forums and then you have society in general as we know it only instead of most people staying silent about their beliefs everybody would have something to say about everything which in turn would be total chaos.

Internet

I don't really think that the Internet is a nice place to stay. I think that the Internet tends to give the illusion of connection when in fact it is not really there. You might be interacting with a large group of people but I am not sure how much of a real connection there is with the majority of them. The Internet is not really the place to have those heart to heart conversations that are required for a real connection with someone. I really don't feel a sense of connection at all when I am on the Internet if anything I feel totally alone. I might sit on a computer and talk to 50 people but if I am not actually interacting with them than I don't feel very connected. If anything I feel sorry for the people that sit in front of a computer screen all day and talk to people on twitter of facebook. I also feel sorry for the people that are reading that senseless dribble. For me I find it more important to make friendships with the poeple around me I find that those friendships are more meaningful than ones with people I meet on the internet.

The Internet - A Nice Place To Stay?

In my opinion about calling the internet 'a nice place to stay', I would say... for the most part, yes, it is.

Don't get me wrong though; I ENJOY using the internet as much as the next person... because of how resourceful it is, in terms of the distribution of information, and the communities that develop within groups of people.

… At the same time, however, just like in real life, you have to be careful of where you go... because, just like in New York City, there are some places out there that are not as friendly as others.

For instance, strangers on the internet: we can talk to them, befriend them, and have a strong bond with one another… but we have to understand... that unless we know them in real life, we can never know who they REALLY are... no matter how close the internet can connect each other.

We are all connected through interests, going from food, to the arts, to even politics. It’s what bonds each other in our communication. The internet itself shares a sense of place and connection based on those… and other places can encourage isolation, because of how empty it is… how dark, how vague.

The internet… it’s a valuable tool, for both personal and public use, and it's a great way to connect to people, but it can also be dangerous. It's a double-bladed sword; both a useful and precautious weapon.

Internet, a nice place to stay?

These places such as facebook, twitter, myspace, etc... are fun places for a little bit, but I don't think I'd like to stay there. They remind me of the friend that you can only hang out with for so long before you start to get a bit annoyed by them, and could not really spend the whole day with them. These social networks I think are a fun way to kill some time and reconnect with people you have not talked to in a while or would never have reconnected with if there was no facebook or myspace.

I know some people who spend almost 100% of their time on at least one of these networks, whether they are updating their status, or they might be just commenting on other people's wall's, comment board, or whatever. I personally could not spend all my time doing that because I would just get extremely bored from just sitting staring at my screen for hours at a time. Especially with twitter, because you can update it with your phone, some people "tweet" their every move. To me, this is taking advantage of your usage.

I think these places share a sense of connection to a certain degree, like I said earlier with reconnecting with someone from school or something like that, but I feel like they also encourage isolation as well. For example, there is so much you can do on facebook that you could spend hours looking at other people's photos, wall comments, their status's, etc... I can see how it could become a routine thing and maybe even an addiction.
I think as far as the internet goes I don't really have a strong opinion on whether it is a nice place to stay or not. I don't think it is a bad place to stay, but whether you like it or not it is here to stay period. The influences the internet puts on us aren't necessarily a good thing but good can come from the internet. For example putting you in connection with people you wouldn't talk to otherwise. You can stay connected to friends and family. The people on the internet are connected through social websites, e-mail, and other various things. The people share the connection but it can also encourage isolation. It really depends on who you are. I personally have a facebook and a myspace and I don't think I'm isolated at all. You just have to find a good balance between a few minutes on the internet, and reality. Some people would rather sit inside on facebook then go outside on an awesome day. This I don't really understand and I think those people are making themselves isolated.

...Cyberspace as a Place...

I feel tht the internet in terms of virtual communities is a nice place to "vacation" bt nt stay. For myself I thnk of facebook as a place to sort of get away frm my day. You basically connect to your friends and relatives through pictures and posts. which in my opinion would be no way to live life. You would never be able to see a person or kno wat summone looks like, yu could onlii base it off of the pictures they post and their profile pictures.
Also the internet can encourage false identities. People tend to get a new since of "confidence about them selves while using the internet, even new i dentities. They make up names, birthdays, hometowns, and may even say things they would not normally say in person. so the person tht you may hav grown to like as a 'friend" maybe not be who you think they are.
All in all I do feel as though the internet shares a sense of space and connection. Bt, only for others within cyberspace. meaning tht if I hav a facebook, and I hav about 800 facebook friends, those are the only peoples pages i hav access to those r they only people tht can reach mii etc. jus by ddoin this i hav limited myself to a set number of individuals i wish to communicate with. Another example is if someone does nt own a computer at all, or has use for one of these social websites, then they are totally "forgotten" in the eyes of cyberspace.
Finally cyberspace 9the medium itself) does encourage much isolation. In order to become an in-depth member of a social network such as twitter, facebook, myspace etc, you hav to take time out to completely isolate yourself frm the "real world". You sit and stare at a computer screen for hours at a time, doing nthn useful bt commenting and "liking" pictures and posts. Some may say tht networking is a form of good communication (which it is) bt it also comes with personal isolation. Cyber space is a good place to vacation bt i would never move in.

Cyberspace as Place

Personally the internet is not a virtual world, or a place to stay. I mean yes it connects lots of people together via the internet. The people that you are in this "virtual world" with are at a computer at their house. They are not in the same place as you, but they might be in the same chat room. Facebook like Twitter and all the other means of internet discussion are just that. They are just a place where I can post what i want to do for the day, and someone else will post back and let me know that they want to do the say thing. The internet is just another means of communication, in other words it is not another world, its like your cell phone. If you need to talk or send someone a message you can pick up your cell phone and do that. It is not like you are in the same place as the person you are calling or sending the message to. You are still in one place while the person you are trying to reach is still in another. It is as simple as that.

Cyberspace as place

I would not consider the internet to be a nice place to stay by looking at the picture. First off, it's in the city, so it's a very busy place and second, it looks like a run down area so if you really lived there, it would not be a nice place. Thinking about the internet, I still don't think virtual communities are a very nice place. They can be if you monitor them and make sure to not get yourself involved with some negative things. A lot of trouble starts on the internet and it causes a lot of problems.
If I were to describe what the internet would physically looks like, I think I would describe it a lot like how the picture looks. It's a big place but it's not very classy. There are a lot of bad things that start on the internet and they spread faster than the word of mouth. I think that the internet is also a way to connect people because I have a Facebook and I keep in contact with a lot of my friends that way. But I think that if you don't watch what you're doing and who you're talking to then it can be a very bad place to be in.
In my opinion, everyone would be much better off if there were no virtual communities. They just cause trouble that could have been avoided. But the thing that I think is the worst is that they are completely covered in viruses so nowadays, you can't even prevent from getting a virus just from getting on Myspace or Facebook. So I think that just from that fact, the internet is not a nice place.

'Anti-Star/The Internet'

It's interesting to hear about how YouTube is being used to create popularity off of people by posting up video, consisting of short, but awesome concepts, to something as long as a guitar cover. I personally do that myself… but more for the joy and fun of expressing myself: through guitar covers, to originals, to just making a random video from time to time.

Like a TV star, who we would watch in admiration for their acting skills, and believing they're more real than life, YouTube is that one place anyone can come up with an idea, and have an equal opportunity to create something that can appear to anyone around the world.

So… in a way, I can see YouTube as another place to go to to help express one’s ideas to the public without it being constricted, or having any sort of requirement (that is, unless you wanted the attention from the audience).

It can be a great way for low-budget people, like us, to express something without the worries of money. Have an idea? Post it up on YouTube; show your friends. It’s a great atmosphere for even the young and talented to be taken notice of.

With the next article on Google, it shows of how reliant we are to the internet. Slowly we're becoming more and more dependent on it, requesting the information we need RIGHT NOW!! Because of this, our horizon for discovering information has changed since long ago. It's a resourceful tool, but at the same time, it changes the sunset we see when trying to look for that information.

For me, I used to mind not reading, and that was because I committed to read for a such and such time everyday during 2 summers ago. But now, due to time and such, I'm having troubles concentrating. It's because I'm hoping to see the end, instead of taking in the story. I'm not saying I DON'T enjoy reading something I wouldn't mind reading, but at times, due to how I learn from books, has effected me with my own personal reading.

That's all I can say.

Youtube Media

The reading in convergences was relevant to me, and I think most of us in this class, because I think it is safe to say we've all looked at youtube videos for fun.

I think that youtube has a lot of creative and innovative people on there, but you've also got the annoying immature people, and the obnoxious people who use it as a soapbox to rant about their ideals. For instance, if you've seen Chris Crocker's videos you'll know what I'm talking about.

The television show Tosh.0 has made a whole show out of making fun of web videos. It's hilarious, and sometimes I am glad people post stupid videos online so that I can laugh at them :)

Youtube

I thought the reading about youtube was pretty funny. Anti-star and Anti-charisma are clever terms to describe the people who are "youtube famous". I think youtube is one of the best things on the internet. It has so much to show. You can say to your friend, "I wonder if someone ever..." and most likely that answer is on youtube and thats the best part. There is always something new or someone new on youtube that sparks "popularity". I use it mostly for looking up live videos of bands to see if they are actually legit when they perform live. I am not going to say I don't use it for entertainment cause...well...there are some pretty ridiculous people out there. I think youtube COULD make someone a star. The chances of it are probably slim but it still could happen. I'm pretty sure I've heard of rappers becoming famous off of youtube and eventually getting signed to a label. Soulja Boy, for instance, got signed because he became noticed on youtube, i'm pretty sure. There's no other way it could have happened, because honestly...he's a horrible rapper. I know there are also comedy groups that make short skits and put them up on youtube, and I'm sure one of them has gotten somewhere with acting BECAUSE of their videos on youtube.

I agree though with the "Anti-star" term though, because most of the videos that are popular are people doing stupid stuff and embarrassing themselves and I mean I don't think this makes them a star at all. This is where "anti-star" comes into use. Its clever and its the perfect word to describe someone on youtube.
