Composing America

I'm not really into history and I find it pretty boring honestly. I never really thought that the Declaration of Independence had a process. I always just figured it was written at one time by a bunch of people and that was that. After reading the "Composing America" reading I realized how dumb I was for thinking that. Its crazy to think that even back in the 1700's they were revising and editing drafts of their pieces they were writing. I see now how much work was actually put into both The Declaration of Independence and The Gettysburg Address.

I thought the power point presentation of the Gettysburg Address was somewhat cool. It was cool to see it modernized into how someone would present it today, rather than having it all written out onto the back of an envelope and reading it.

The Johnny Cash version of the Gettysburg Address is more effective to me. The music behind it gives it a more powerful and emotional feel. If it were just Johnny Cash reading it without music, I think it would be exactly the same as someone else reading it. The music just gives it a whole different feel. Even though its subtle, it has a powerful impact.

  1. I think Cash's one-of-a-kind voice is what really drives that version. He could read a grocery list and make it sound riveting.
