Declaration of Indepedence

I thought this week's reading was more difficult than the previous, but I'll give it a shot ! The beginning of Composing America talked about what it took to compose such a writing. I never really thought about how long it must have took to write the declaration of indepedence. But now that i thought deeper into it, I'm sure the people who wrote it had to revise it a million times to get it perfect. Then it made me think about the importance of revising your papers. The declaration of independence and all the other documents for the United States weren't perfect the first time they were drafted. It takes a lot of effort and revising to make something well enough crafted to "turn in" or in this case, make official. It went on to discuss Calligraphy vs. Typography. I believe they used calligraphy rather than typography because using calligraphy makes the document one of a kind. You can't print out multiple copies of something when the original is someone's personal hand writing. The declaration of indepedence should only have one copy, because it is so important and shouldn't be handled by just anyone.

  1. Nice post. You make a strong argument for the calligraphy version. Maybe the Declaration SHOULD be something special, something that couldn't be produced en masse by just anyone...
