In the actual reading, I can relate to how the writer says that songs can take you back with memories. When you hear a certain song, you can remember where you were and what you were doing that exact moment when you heard it. You also remember many small details that you would have never remembered if it weren't for that song. I hate to sound like that wimpy "emo" kid but I know there are a lot of songs that when I hear them I remember my ex-girlfriend, and remember being places with her and hearing a certain song playing.
When hearing older songs, It reminds of certain times in high school or even middle school. It reminds of fun times hanging out with my friends or maybe it reminds me of where I was the first time I had ever heard that song.
I really enjoyed the audio essay. I thought the sound quality was perfectly fine. I thought it was very intriguing. I really liked the part about how that instrumental was banned, simply because it "sounded" dirty or whatever. The great thing about music is that this is true. You can make a song sound "dark" simply by music you write. Look at Black Sabbath for example. When they came out their sound was so dark and so heavy. Just by the first few chords you could that this band was "dark". Then Ozzy's piercing vocals came in and it was the perfect fit for this new sound that was coming from people's radios.
I also liked the point that was made about how the lyrics don't necessarily have to "deep" or whatever to make the song. As long as they are delivered in a rhythmic way or a melodic way than thats all that matters sometimes in a song. The lyrics that are the most remember are usually ones that really aren't that deep. People just get the melody or rhythm of how they are delivered stuck in their head.
Having an emotional reaction to a song doesn't make you "emo", Cameron (thankfully).
ReplyDeleteI like some very "deep" lyrics, but they have to work within the context of the song - their power comes from how they sound, and not just what they say. As you point out, we get some pretty ridiculous lines stuck in our heads.
Sabbath = very good example.
