The Simpsons on being cool
Gladwell's assertion is saying if you try hard to be cool, but you're not already seen as cool, it probably won't happen for you. The episode had a flashback of Homer in high school, and he wasn't cool back then either. He was never seen as cool except for by Bart because he thought the fact that Homer was taking cannon balls to the stomach was cool. A lot the episode, too, was about what's cool to your parents usually isn't cool to the youth anymore. What's cool back in the day isn't cool now. Trends come and go, but can be recycled, though. I know a lot of people who listen to Smashing Pumpkins.
